A curious Spotted Owl (Strix occidentalis) looks down from its perch in the canopy of a canyon in the San Gabriel Mountains of southern California. The Spotted Owl is an IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) near threatened species, though this particular California subspecies is not in as much danger as the Northern Spotted Owls which live in old growth forests of Northern California and the Pacific Northwest.
