Glowing smoke and steam illuminated by the active lava lake in the Halema'uma'u Crater within the Kilauea Caldera of Hawaii's Volcanoes National Park. Photographed during the summer of 2011. The purple hues at the top of the smoke column are a natural result of the mixing of orange glowing light from the lava below and the natural blueish twilight light coming from above (in complete darkness the entire smoke column is a warm color).
