Many of the minerals in Mono Lake come from the surrounding volcanic areas. In this picture I am standing on an old volcano, holding a piece of silica-rich obsidian, which I sprayed with Mono Lake water on the left, and Pacific Ocean water on the right to illustrate how many more minerals are in Mono Lake.
