"Dr. Lindsay and a Fly"

no. 20161222_0087_tethered_fly_thad

Caltech, CA

A fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, tethered to a tungsten pin. Despite not going anywhere, the fly will flap its wings, and respond to visual scenery as if it were in fact moving. This is a common approach used in the Dickinson lab (and many others) to study the visual control of flight behavior. In the background is Dr. Theodore Lindsay, and his microscope.
